The hidden garden in East London

St Dunstan in the East, a secret escape place for many

The tranquil, hidden escape place for many in London is named St Dunstan in the East. It is a hidden garden surrounded by church ruins of a church destroyed by German bombs.

Located between London Bridge and Tower of London specifically St Dunstan’s Hill, St Dunstan’s is a public garden which once was a Church of England Parish, it was badly damaged by the Great Fire of London, rather than being completely rebuilt, the damaged church was patched up. After the fire Sir Christopher Wren built a new tower.

The tower and steeple, along with the north and south walls, are the only parts that still stand today – the rest having been wiped out in 1941 by a German bomb. Wren's tower and steeple survived the bombs' impact. Instead of rebuilding it, it was decided to turn the ruins of the church into a public garden, which opened in 1971. A lawn and trees were planted in the ruins, with a low fountain in the middle of the garden.

Even though it is located in a popular location it is well hidden and not known by many. Those who do know about it come to the garden to take beautiful pictures with friends and family, many come for a walk in the fresh air and others take a seat in the centre where there are benches and relax or read a book. This is a great place to think and take a break from the world improving ones mental health. Emilia Albrycht who visited recently after not knowing anything about it said “I must say, when I first arrived I didn’t think much of it, however, when I explored further, it blew me away! The nature is beautiful and makes it look so capturing, definitely recommend!”
