Meet The Art Buyer - where banishing blank walls is believed to be a journey of heartfelt passion for everyone to take.

In the village of Thames Ditton, a newly established gallery founded by Helen Armon-Jones is tackling the daunting task of buying art. Helen started her gallery and consultancy business ‘The Art Buyer’ on her love for art. Whilst studying History of Art in Manchester, she developed a keen eye and understanding of the context and method behind works of art.

Art is full of vitality. Whether for yourself or for others. It may reflect who you are and who you wish to be. Our energy is shaped by our experiences in the world be they relationships, events or everyday life occurrences. Experiences are unique for everyone. It‘s the act of creation, what you may perceive as art someone else may not. The whole idea of banishing blank walls is to express your emotions and thoughts outwardly. To encompass yourself with beauty.

It may however seem daunting to raise the torch to buy art, and that is the purpose of ‘The Art Buyer’. To guide the journey and fill it with excitement so the spark from a piece of artwork never dims by a perceived monotonous chore. Helen shared some advice for those interested in buying art. First off do your research. Research is key when searching for art, there are so many available ways to look for art. 'Open Studies' are fantastic; no pressure zones where you get to explore and develop a feel for the work and connect with the artist. They are also a great way to enjoy the process, an essential element in the hunt for a meaningful piece. If there isn’t a spark of passion or enthusiasm don’t buy the work just because it would look nice with the furniture. You must truly love it if it is to be a worthwhile investment and something that you will treasure forever.

Taking photos can be useful. When you find a piece that interests you, taking photos of it will help plan where you want to put it and let you resonate with the art and the artist’s message before purchasing. For beginner art buyers works on paper are always a good starting point especially limited addition works which are particularly beautiful and often within people’s budgets. Another necessity is the framing of artwork. Framing is crucial to bringing life to the piece and helping it fit harmoniously with its surroundings. Finally, it’s the experience - buying art shouldn’t be a chore, by working with a consultant such as Helen, you can acquire something special, even acquiring a commissioned work, should you want an extra personal piece. Art is for the heart, your heart. Helen believes in the concept ‘Art with a Heart’, coming from a charitable background she encourages sharing art and giving back. ‘The Art Buyer’ is all about affordable prices and fair commission for artists. Helen believes the world of art should not be elitist but available for all to enjoy. A percentage from each sale goes to charitable causes and this year’s chosen charity is Young Minds.

Young Minds is the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people's mental health. Helen chose this incredible charity due to the pandemic and lockdowns which have had a staggering effect on people’s mental health, and she believes that the “younger generation have felt the brunt of it” missing out on some of the most fundamental years in their lives. It is important to ‘The Art Buyer’ to recognise the art world as an inclusive industry and banishing the blank wall is about creating a comfortable and lovable space. Approach art with passion!
