Dramatising 300 years of Parmiter’s

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

This year, Parmiter’s school is celebrating a big birthday. It's the 300th one! This is an immense milestone in the institution’s history; so, the major celebrations have begun. The drama department (staff and students) have been working tirelessly to create a play that puts a twist on the history, whilst still capturing its prominence and honouring it. Named ‘The Parmiter’s Code’ it follows the story of two Parmiter’s students Bobby and Sophie and their exciting adventure.

This anniversary has furthered the importance of learning about the history of the school throughout the Parmiter’s community. As it reminds staff and students of the rich history of the school. When asked about the significance of the 300th anniversary, Mr Jones (the Headmaster) commented: “There is an importance of understanding the purpose of the school, its huge journey and where we come from.”

So as part of the process of understanding the school's journey the play blossomed into fruition after Mr Froy (Head of Drama) undertook extensive historical research and began writing the play.

After the script writing, came the casting and then the rehearsal process. When discussing play rehearsals and what it was like putting on a play about such important local history, sixth former Isla Savern, who plays the character Sophie, said: “Rehearsing was a very fun experience, we started off just with scripts, blocking it and doing all the spacing and stuff like that and then as we got further into it Mr Froy let us use our own creativity and give our input into developing our characters and the play.”

Isla also discussed the importance of showing history through drama (as the play’s subject is the history of Parmiter’s) and she added: “Not everyone personally resonates with the style of just sitting and listening to history, but if you convey it through a medium of entertainment it might engage them more.”

‘The Parmiter’s Code’ debuts on the 1, 2 and 3 December at Parmiter’s School; it is a must attend for anyone eager to learn about the history of the school. The entire drama department has worked super hard on it and in the words of Isla Savern: “It is cheerful, fun and feel-good!” So definitely worth a watch!
