Disrupted Commutes in Kingston

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

For the past few weeks, commuters have noticed longer traffic queues and difficulty accessing the centre of Kingston. This is due to the number of road works that stretch from Kingston bridge all the way to Richmond road.

Residents report roadworks to regularly disrupt their travels, and commuter Georgina Brown complained: “It feels like they’re always doing work on something or other.” She added that her commute is frequently delayed by the roadworks.

As a result of these roadworks, those driving into Kingston during peak hours have experienced stop start traffic jams which can last up to a mile and delay journeys upwards of an hour. Not only are businesses affected by these late arrivals, but so is education.

Kingston has a number of primary and secondary schools, offering grammar, state and private education. Surely the continued disruption to transport in the borough is having an effect on the education of young people in our community.

However, despite local discontent, road works are a sign that the council is investing in infrastructure. Though these roadworks are an inconvenience that's sure not to be the last, residents can only hope the troublesome problems are resolved quickly so travel can return to normal.
